Channel 5 programme chief: why won't Ricky Gervais work for us?

Jeff Ford says it is fashionable to give Richard Desmond channel a 'kicking', but he is improving it with new shows

The Channel 5 director of programmes, Jeff Ford, has hit back at Ricky Gervais for not wanting to work for the Richard Desmond-owned broadcaster.

Speaking at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival Ford said: "Why doesn't he want to give us a chance? We're trying to improve our channel and get it to a better place. We've been unfairly treated for a time."

Gervais indicated in an earlier Edinburgh TV festival interview he would not work for Channel 5.

Ford said it has been fashionable to give his channel "a kicking" but that he is working on changing that.

Ford added: "It's a fun channel and quite reflective of Britain as it is, it's a blue-collar approach to Britain but that's not to say it's downmarket."

Ford said he was very pleased with the performance of Celebrity Big Brother, which averaged around 2.8 million viewers on Friday night for Sally Bercow's eviction.

He said it was drawing around the same number of viewers as when Channel 4 aired it and given Channel 5 a springboard to pull in new viewers.

But he said "history has taught us" that the ratings will be lower when the non-celebrity version airs.

Ford said forthcoming shows include army documentary The Brigade and a new series of Extreme Fishing with Robson Green, in which the actor will challenge anglers around the world to a fishing competition.

He is also ordering programming involving wildlife and engineering.

Ford said there has been some in-house development of shows at Channel 5, including the forthcoming Celebrity Wish List. "We're not quite Shine yet, but we'll get there."

When asked if there was an "image problem" with his channel's proprietor Desmond, Ford said: "The one thing about Richard is that I've not known a man so passionate about the channel. He's interested in it. RTL was a different set of circumstances but Richard's 100% behind it.

Ford said he was no worried if Channel 5 was "not liked by a few people, if we're not liked by the chattering classes". "Our approach is fun, fun, fun and his approach is fun, fun, fun. This marriage might work for the both of us."

He also drew laughter from the Edinburgh audience when he revealed: "We kept playing the same episodes of Trisha for two years and nobody noticed."

Javaris Crittenton News Report

Jones was a mother of four who was killed when shots were fired by someone inside a dark SUV, police say. They believe she was in the wrong place at the wrong time and the intended target was a man who robbed Crittenton in April.

Rewind TV: The Man Who Crossed Hitler; Hans Litten vs Adolf Hitler: To Stop a Tyrant; Random; American: The Bill Hicks Story; The Hour ? review

Ed Stoppard was impressive as the lawyer who dared to put the Fhrer in the dock in The Man Who Crossed Hitler, while The Hour came to a satisfying close

Hans Litten vs Adolf Hitler: To Stop a Tyrant (BBC2) | iPlayer

The Hour (BBC2) | iPlayer

For all its virtue as an attention-grabber, any play called The Man Who Crossed Hitler ? a story based on true events ? was bound to struggle with the weight of dramatic irony. However much you wondered who this man was, you didn't have to wonder if things would end well for him.

This was the tragedy of Hans Litten, a smart young Berlin lawyer who, in 1931, hauled Germany's raging Fhrer-to-be into court for an afternoon of impudent questioning, in particular to have him explain the apparent confusion in Nazi party policy between his own recently sworn disavowal of violence and the activities of the city's gangs of storm troopers, two of whose number stood accused of marching with their fellows into a local communists' social evening for an orgy of shooting, knifing and bludgeoning.

Litten couldn't touch Hitler for the killings, but by interrogating him as a witness he sought to prepare the ground for a perjury charge (a plan equalled in its bathos, it occurred to me, by the US Department of the Treasury, which that same year was busy successfully prosecuting Al Capone for not paying tax). At the very least, it would provide a courtroom ding-dong that would expose Hitler either as an unreformed thug to his big-money, bourgeois backers or as a turncoat wuss to the millions of Brown Shirt maniacs who were out spreading mayhem and fear in his name.

The unenviable line: "I call on witness Adolf Hitler?" was always going to sound like the beginning of a Monty Python sketch, though by now we had been introduced to him, albeit gradually ? a glimpse of his short-back-and-sides, his mustachioed profile, his brown-trousered leg and polished shoe ? as if to prepare us for the faint but inevitable letdown of Ian Hart (who once played John Lennon, though admittedly in the Beatles' Hamburg years) not quite being the man we'd seen barking his head off in the newsreel and, of course, for not quite being German.

But Hart made a good job of giving us the face of the tyrant we knew ? the barely restrained contempt, the righteous menace, the steam coming out of his reddening ears; he captured, too, Hitler's weird single-mindedness ? his distractedness from others, his thousand-year stare, the way (even in the public tearoom, full of whispers and glances) his voice rose above the conversational until he was addressing not people but the glorious, blazing future itself. Litten had been warned not to let Hitler make speeches but he was soon at it in the witness box, to unquenchable, defeating cheers.

Ed Stoppard convinced as Litten in his bullish excitement, then in his ashen, dawning shock (refusing to flee, he ended up in Dachau, where he killed himself); Anton Lesser was strong as his senior colleague Rudolf (who did flee); Bill Paterson was nicely evasive as the craven judge. There were moments to pull a face at. Litten's carpenter friend Max (John Hollingworth), looked up from his spokeshave with perhaps one too many knowing political apercus; and Litten's "weary" catalogue of his father's objections to the new Weimar republic ? "To him, it's all atonal music, flat roofs, Bauhaus chairs, the rumba, Otto Dix, negro jazz, Jewish self-assertion" ? could have done with the lumps taken out of it.

But it drove you to set your clock for the play's sister documentary, Hans Litten vs Adolf Hitler (though why we had to wait a week for it I don't know). Here was the bigger picture in testimony and flickering footage: the rise of Hitler from his lederhosen days; his campaign against Berlin, a dangerous world city of artists, thinkers, homosexuals, Jews and communists; we learned where the Brown Shirts got their mindset from, and their Mausers; how Hitler charmed and then rid himself of his political enemies; there was the burning of books to the sound of oompah bands.

More of Litten's fate was filled in too: how he was moved from camp to camp as his mother and others around the world pressed vainly for his freedom; the torture, the broken bones and knocked-out teeth. There was the story of the poem he read out at a camp gathering in honour of Hitler's birthday, "Thoughts Are Free", its sentiments ? and Litten's defiance ? apparently lost on the watching guards. Surviving family and friends (Litten's niece, Max's daughter) and contributors now gave a poignant reading of the poem, each framed by the camera reciting one line in turn. It made a simple, powerful end to the two films, which together brought light to an act of heroism all but swallowed by history.

It took a while to get the measure of the multiple perspectives in Random, an adaptation of Debbie Tucker Green's one-woman stage play about a black schoolboy stabbed to death in the street.

It was urban violence as mundane, culminating in an ad hoc shrine, a gathering of local people, floral tributes, shiny balloons, messages in txt spk.

The day started like any other: the sister trying to get the idle boy out of bed for school, the mother burning the porridge, the sister going to her boring office job, the boy late for his class. Although nothing much happened (and when it did, it was offstage), it was a job to keep your eye on the switching narrative ? divided between naturalistic scenes from home, school and office and others in which the sister (the evidently versatile Nadine Marshall), in a dark, empty studio set, acted out the observations and fleeting thoughts of all three characters (four, when the father, who worked nightshifts, finally put in an appearance). At one point, there were three of her onstage, each one "being" someone else. It did keep you on your toes, as did the pacy, heightened language rendered in youth argot or, in the case of the mother, sinuous Caribbean dialect charged with abrasive humour and abrasive sadness. There were kind words but not many.

This flitter of spoken subtext added a poetic richness to the action: from it, we learned (though it wasn't hard to guess) the sister's contempt for her work colleagues, her irritation with a boyfriend who hadn't called; it was strong in capturing the mind of the mother, a no-nonsense materfamilias who deflected bad news with an internal commentary on the police clomping in their boots over her clean carpets, on the enforced calm they brought to proceedings ? "too trained in an unnatural politeness to let their guard slip". But did it need all this? The family, tormented in the end by this slow hammering of grief and regret, were impermeable to sympathy. It made time stand still. I was dulled by it. How can you feel, I thought, when there's so much thinking going on?

American: The Bill Hicks Story was a treat, and not just for fans of the enraged cult comic genius, who died at the age of 32. That sounds pretty young but he started when he was 14. His brother recalled getting home from college one weekend to find young Bill packing out nightclubs in Houston, Texas. It was a compelling story ? the hallucinogenic years, the drunk years and always the cigarette years. The film ? surely the most visually inventive bio-doc ever ? is a kinetic masterpiece of cut-and-paste photo-animation, with voiced commentary from the people who loved him most. "Bill was? interesting," said his mother, a southern baptist and pillar of the community. The highlight (which also appeared straight afterwards in BBC4's documentary, Bill Hicks: Revelations, his London concert in 1992) was the classic clip of Hicks as Jack Palance in Shane forcing the poor sheep herder into a fight (it's a skit on America v Iraq). "Pick up the gun?"

What was Hicks's secret? "It's not enough to make jokes," he said. "You have to kick over some tables."

The Hour has drawn some understandable sniper fire, but it's the only show I've kept switching on for these past six weeks. Yes, the espionage element has been ponderous and often laughable (Freddie's wrestling match with the MI6 man reminded me of Mr Bean struggling with a stepladder), I found it hard to care about Suez, and on BBC wages it was never going to look like Mad Men. But the cast was top-notch and in Freddie and Bel I haven't seen such unexploded chemistry since Grace Kelly nursed James Stewart's broken leg in Rear Window. No one applauded louder than me when they finally said they hated each other and went off jobless into the sunset.

Has Minka Kelly Found a New Man?

Seemingly, it would be very difficult to move on from Derek Jeter. But has Minka Kelly already done so?

It was announced this week that the shortstop and the actress have ended their three-year relationship and, already, rumors are surfacing that Kelly has cozied up to a co-star.

"We have seen Minka and Ramon talking in his trailer way after hours, and often late into the night," a source tells People of Kelly and Charlie's Angels actor Ramon Rodriguez "They have been together long after they need to be for the show."

Charlie's Angels Promo

Rodriguez portrays John Bosley on the upcoming ABC remake of this classic series. He's the only man in the cast, which is why another insider says there's nothing at all to his interactions with Kelly:

"They're just friends. Ramon is basically the only guy on set, so of course they all hang out with him."

Jeter, however, may be feeling the affects of this split. He went 1-4 with a strikeout last night in the Orioles 12-5 mauling of the Yankees.

Big Brother 13 Episode 22 Recap of Double Eviction

Last night was a busy one on Big Brother 13, Episode 22 so let us recap the live double eviction. First, as we know. Jeff won the Zingbot Bride POV contest. Since he was HOH, he now had full control over the nominations for eviction. During the POV ceremony, Jeff decided to take Porsche off the chopping block and replaced here with Danielle. This put the two allies, Dani and Kalia at odds with each other. Jeff succeeded as HOH in evicting Danielle, but at a price. Image Credit: Nikki Nelson / WENN.com. Danielle was able to convince Shelly to campaign for her, which the flighty Shelly was eager to do. Shelly tried to persuade Adam to vote against Jeff and his alliance and keep Danielle in the house. But Adam was not willing to commit. So Shelly bit her tongue, swallowed what little pride she has and started working on Rachel. Shelly told Rachel how Jeff deliberately threw the POV contest that resulted in Brendon being booted. Rachel went to Danielle to discuss the situation and a deal was offered by Dani. Sometime just before the live eviction vote, Jeff learned that Shelly was betraying him and his alliance. [...]

'Rum Diary' Trailer: Johnny Depp Storms Puerto Rico

More than a decade after Johnny Depp took a trip into bat country in the adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," he is returning to the writer's substance-infused stories in the first trailer for "The Rum Diary." The rum certainly isn't gone in this film.

Angelina Jolie's Zaika Dinner Outing in London

Drawing an end to the week, Angelina Jolie was spotted leaving the Dorchester hotel in London, England on Friday evening (August 26).

Dressed in her usual all-black garb, the "Wanted" actress was joined by a friend as the two headed to Zaika Restaurant on Kensington High Street for a bite to eat.

The outing comes just after Miss Jolie attended the International Criminal Court's landmark first trial in The Hague, Netherlands.

The 36-year-old actress watched on during the trial of Congolese warlord Thomas Lubanga, who is facing charges of using child soldiers during his country's civil conflict.

Of the event, Ang told the Associated Press, "This is an extraordinary moment for international justice but more than that for children of the world."

She added, "It is quite striking to have a prosecutor from [the post-World War II Nuremberg trials] here today. You see his clarity, his wisdom, his strength and his compassion for this situation which he has witnessed over the years and now he's here to plead on behalf of these children in particular."

Comic Con Preview Night 2011

Here it is, gang! Technically, the fun doesn’t start until today, but we got pics from last night’s Preview Night for you here. Lego was out in full force with Lego Batman, Boba Fett, Bumblebee and more. There weren’t many people in costume yet, but there were two girls dresses as slave girl Leia. The big news of the night was Dark Horse’s “big reveal”. After announcing that Guillermo del Toro would not be appearing, Mike Richardson brought out Tom Morello to announce his new comic, Orchid. It was a quickie announcement, but fans are sure to hear more about Orchid throughout the con.
Check out the pics and be sure to follow Trashwire on Twitter for live tweets from SDCC.

Father of Real Housewives of New Jersey Star Arrested for Arson, Money Laundering

It's on a very different level than the tragedy of Russell Armstrong's suicide on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, but another installment in this Bravo franchise is facing yet another scandal.

Matt Holmes - the father of Ashlee Holmes and former lover of Jacqueline Laurita (pictured) - has been arrested in Texas for arson, insurance fraud and money laundering. He and his wife, Jodi Sue, were booked for a fire that destroyed their home in March.

Jacqueline Laurita in Action

According to Radar Online, a witness has come forward and said Matt started the fire in order to collect on a $429,000 insurance policy. The couple then allegedly used this cash to purchase items such as a diamond ring.

Local authorities are working with the FBI on the case, but Ashlee has already taken to Twitter to defend her father:

“FYI- my parents have NOT been indicted..this whole thing was started by a disgruntled employee..they are INNOCENT &that’s all i have to say.”

Readers recommend: TV themes

This week we're after music on the box. Stay tuned ?

Confession: I hardly watch telly. Haven't done for years. But as a child and young man, I watched enough to last a lifetime. Many of my earliest musical memories are associated with favourite television programmes.

Composers of TV themes have sometimes been treated rather sniffily by their fellow musicians, music fans and record collectors. But while music isn't always the main ingredient of TV, much good television has a musical component.

So let's celebrate the best. Post your suggestions of great TV themes below, and I'll gather the best of them in a blog here next Thursday.

The toolbox:

* Listen to others' suggestions and add yours to a collaborative Spotify playlist

* Guide to "donds", "zedded", and other strange words used by some of the RR regulars (courtesy of the Marconium)

* The Marconium (blog containing a wealth of data on RR, including the songs that are "zedded")

* The 'Spill (blog for the RR community)

Please do:

* Post your nominations before midday on Tuesday if you wish them to be considered.

* Write a few lines advocating the merits of your choices.

But please don't:

* Post more than one third of the lyrics of any song.

* Dump lists of nominations. If you must post more than two or three at once, please attempt to justify your choices.

Phone hacking comedy for Channel 4 from Drop the Dead Donkey creator

Guy Jenkin working on script for Hacks, an hour-long programme that will take 'satirical swipe' at scandal

Drop The Dead Donkey writer Guy Jenkin is creating a TV comedy about newspaper phone hacking for Channel 4.

The hour-long programme will take a "satirical swipe" at the scandal when it is screened later this year.

The show, with the working title Hacks, is set in a fictional paper where staff indulge in phone hacking, blagging and "pinging" to get a story by any means necessary.

It follows the scandal which brought about the closure of the News Of The World and led to the departure of senior News International executives as well as top Scotland Yard figures.

Jenkin, the co-creator of TV newsroom sitcom Drop The Dead Donkey, is currently working on the script. He said: "We hope to be faster and funnier than all the inquiries so far."

Shane Allen, Channel 4's head of comedy who commissioned the show, said: "We are very excited about Hacks and it's great that Channel 4 can be so quick off the mark to shine a satirical light on what's been happening in the media over the last few months."

Tim Berners-Lee voted most inspirational person in their 50s

Father of the world wide web pips Hugh Grant, Kim Cattrall, Nick Cave, and Grayson Perry in survey by the high50.com club

The young, it seems, need do little more than flick a Bieberesque fringe or pout vampirically to attract the undying devotion of their peers.

But if you're 50-something and out to impress your contemporaries, you'll need to set your sights rather higher. To win their approval, you may find yourself compelled to revolutionise the flow of information across the planet, put sex firmly and loudly at the heart of the city, take on Rupert Murdoch, become one of your generation's most respected songwriters, or embrace ceramics and cross-dressing. That, at any rate, is what the latest August survey would have us believe.

Members of the high50.com club ? "an online community with cutting edge editorial for people who believe life really begins at 50" ? have pronounced Tim Berners-Lee, father of the world wide web, the most inspirational person in their 50s. Close behind are Hugh Grant, Kim Cattrall, Nick Cave and Grayson Perry. Also in the top 10 are the designer and film-maker Tom Ford, the actors Colin Firth and Tilda Swinton, the journalist Tina Brown and the designer Cath Kidston.

A longlist of the 50 most inspirational people in their 50s was compiled by a panel of journalists and then handed to the website's readers for a vote. After 1,363 responses had been received, the top 10 was announced. Falling just short were Hugh Laurie, Ricky Gervais, Nigella Lawson, Annie Lennox, Imran Khan and Jeanette Winterson.

Tim Willis, the editor of high50.com, said getting on the longlist was far from easy. "Being 50 isn't about resting on your laurels, in our eyes. It's about moving forward, trying something new, adding to your talents and knowledge base."

Gina McKee and Neil Morrissey sign up for BBC2 police corruption drama

Stars join cast headed by Lennie James and Vicky McClure for Line of Duty, which explores a fictitious fatal police shooting

BBC2 has lined up a cast including Vicky McClure, Lennie James, Gina McKee and Neil Morrissey for a topical new drama based on a mistaken police shooting and corruption in the force.

The BBC2 drama, Line of Duty, takes "a probing look at modern policing" following the fictitious cover-up of a fatal mistaken shooting. Location filming began in Birmingham this week.

Written and produced by the creator of Bodies and Cardiac Arrest, Jed Mercurio, Line of Duty will air on BBC2 early next year under the channel's "Quality British Drama" banner.

Ben Stephenson, the controller of BBC drama commissioning, described the drama as "remarkably prescient".

Lennie James plays a popular and successful policeman, detective chief inspector Tony Gates, who is accused of corruption. Martin Compston, the Scottish actor most famous for roles in Sweet Sixteen and Monarch of the Glen, will star alongside McClure as the officers charged with investigating police corruption.

The cast also includes McKee, Morrissey, Adrian Dunbar and Kate Ashfield.

Mercurio described Line of Duty as "a commentary on the perverse bureaucracy that hamstrings frontline officers, but first and foremost it's a thriller".

He said: "I'm hugely excited by the opportunity to set a drama in the controversial realities of 21st century policing."

The five-part series is being made by World Productions, the independent producer behind United, Outlaws, Party Animals and The Cops. Simon Heath will executive produce for World, Stephen Wright for the BBC.

Directing duties are being shared by David Caffrey and Douglas Mackinnon.

Banana Republic launches Mad Men clothing range

FASHION DILEMMA

Which TV shows have a future in fashion?

It's been a while since we had a spurious excuse to talk about Mad Men in Fashion Statement Towers. And, given that it's written into all Guardian contracts that we must, by law, reference both that series and The Wire at least 5,601 times a year, it's been a fallow old time.

Instead we've been left playing dress-up with our Joan Barbie doll and scouring the pages of TV Guide, where this week we had the rather amusing tale of January Jones being slated by her 11-year-old on-screen son to entertain us. "Be careful around January Jones," young Jared Gilmore (aka Bobby) told the magazine. "... Everyone else is so nice." Eek. Will he ever work in that town again?

Hooray, then, for for Banana Republic, who is launching a 65-item capsule collection (is that really a capsule collection? Does even Betty Draper have that many outfit changes?) bearing the Mad Men logo. Now we can play dress-up, full-size version! The collection - for both men and women - has been designed in collaboration with costumer designer Janie Bryant and is the same price as the main range. Prepare yourself for wasp waists, full and pencil skirts, slick suits, skinny ties, fedoras, cigarette holders and little black books for all your conquests' phone numbers.

In fact, this natural marriage of fashion and TV has made Fashion Statement wonder why other shows don't launch their own ranges. Amazingly enough, we have some suggestions of our own ...

1. Game of Thrones

Looking back to the 50s and 60s for fashion inspiration? FAR too modern. Let's go for a quasi-medieval look la HBO's recent hit. Bring on the bling with statement necklaces, cowl-neck robe-style dresses and lots of freshly killed animal leather ... you can imagine the designers conference right now. "Darlings, we just have to source organic burlap for this coat." Admittedly the ad campaign might want to steer clear of the whole incest thing, but FS can totally see the multiple leather strap/faux sword-holder thing catching on.

2. The Killing

Never can more column inches have been devoted to one piece of knitwear than that sported by the heroine of the Danish TV thriller. The original, made by Faroese company Gudrun & Gudrun, is still on sale for ?280 (insert your own "they are making a killing on that" joke here), but clearly this is beyond the reach of most purses. FS suggests a range of traditionally patterned knitwear, with an advertising campaign showing in forensic detail the blood-splatter-proof nature of the fine knits.

3. Fringe

London fashion week already has Fashion Fringe. Up-and-coming designers? Whatever. Let's relaunch it as a slick workwear collection based on Olivia Dunham's FBI wardrobe of sharp suits, starched collars and black boots. But never mind a hard day in the office, this range would need to be resistant to alien slime, mutant spider attack and capable of withstanding the atmospheric pressure of crossing between universes. Also, can we have Joshua Jackson in the ad campaign please? Yes, OK, FS is a sci-fi nerd. Want to make something of it?

4. The Hour

Essential to replicating the spirit of the show, this range would need to be massively overhyped, take out ad campaigns in every major fashion magazine, and then ultimately prove to be totally lame.

More suggestions below, please.

FASHIONISTA OF THE WEEK

Take that look off your face - FS is actually in awe of Zoe Saldana for going for a half Las Vegas showgirl, half robot, half curtain rail look. Not least because that's actually one and a half Zoe Saldanas. Impressive.

FASHION GRAVEYARD

One Day: didn't like the book, don't like the dress, blah blah grump blah. To be honest though, FS just likes an excuse to trot out its favourite Anne Hathaway anecdote. Her ex-boyfriend, Raffaello Follieri, currently incarcerated for fraud, money laundering and conspiracy, told her he was the chief financial officer of the Vatican, and even had some monsignor robes hanging in their joint wardrobe, presumably to add authenticity to his claim. Apparently this did not raise any alarm bells.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Drum roll please ... this week's award for utterly insane over-the-top attention to detail:

As the story is so much about Emma's reflection on life, set director Dominic Capon wanted her to have the same mirror throughout. He turned down 150 mirrors before finding "The One" on eBay.

From 10 things you never wanted to know about One Day, but Grazia forced you to find out.

SHOPPING NEWS

Chic French brand Comptoir des Cotonniers has a new line for teen girls (it's aimed at ages 11-15). FS is feeling rather envious of said teens, as it loves the check shirts and bobble knit cardigans. Can we pass for ...? Oh, why are we even asking, of course we can't. Anyway the new line, made up of a dozen pieces starting at 35, will be in store from this month.

Matt Damon for president? In US politics, it's not too far from the script

The line between Hollywood fame and political power is often blurred, so suggestions that the liberal actor might run can't be dismissed

Even in the increasingly wild world of American politics, it seemed an especially crazy idea: Matt Damon for president? After all, the handsome actor, whose boyish good looks belie the fact that he has just turned 40, is still best known for his early role in Good Will Hunting, where he played a working-class Bostonian.

Since then, he has won plaudits in Hollywood for solid work in films ranging from action flicks to Invictus, which told the story of post-apartheid South Africa's rugby World Cup triumph.

So why is Damon's name being mentioned in the context of the 2012 race for the White House and a possible liberal challenge to Barack Obama? The simple answer is to blame leftwing firebrand Michael Moore.

Moore, in a discussion with the liberal politics blog Firedoglake, raised the issue as he talked about his frustration with Obama, who many American leftists see as ignoring them while compromising with the Republican party. Moore called Damon's political stances in recent years courageous and urged him to run, despite there being no hint from the actor himself that he would care to. In a nod to the acting past of two-time Republican President Ronald Reagan, Moore said: "The Republicans have certainly shown the way that when you run someone who is popular, you win. Sometimes even when you run an actor, you win."

The suggestion quickly spread across the media, generating a lot of chuckles as well as predictable outrage from conservative pundits. But the suggestion showed two things that are not so easily dismissed. First, quietly and with impressive charm, Damon has emerged as an eloquent and fierce spokesman for a slice of liberal America. On everything from the Iraq war to education policy, he has been happy to take a stand and, rather than praise the president, he has come out publicly to say Obama has "mishandled his mandate".

Second, it showed that America, more than any country in the world, has a fluid boundary between the worlds of entertainment and politics.

From Reagan to Clint Eastwood, Sonny Bono to Arnold Schwarzenegger and Al Franken and many more, the list of US actors and performers turned politicians is lengthy and even distinguished. "The kind of character that pursues an acting career in America is often the same kind of character that pursues a political career. You have to stand up and make people like you and be good on TV," said Professor Robert Thompson, a popular culture expert at Syracuse University. So, Matt Damon for president? In 2012, almost certainly not. But one day? You never know.

Damon is certainly no shallow celebrity, long on good looks but short on brains. The Massachusetts native may have chosen Hollywood as a career, but he is not an actor picking causes with carefully staged press conferences on subjects that no one could dislike, such as stopping African famine.

Instead, Damon has lent his high profile name to the distinctly unfashionable cause of the Working Families Party. The WFP is an obscure leftwing political party that exists as a sort of pressure group in New York state on Democrats and leftists in order to pursue progressive ideals. Attaching your name to the WFP is about as far from trendy as any Hollywood celebrity could get. Yet Damon has been a passionate advocate for the party, appearing in a 2010 campaign video for them in which he urged New Yorkers to shun the Democrats and vote for the WFP as a genuine leftwing alternative.

Damon has won the hearts of many liberals by criticising Obama over policy issues, and standing up for teachers. Speaking at a recent Save Our Schools march in Washington, DC, he angrily denied a reporter's suggestion that teachers were cosseted. "A teacher wants to teach. I mean, why else would you take a shitty salary, and really long hours, and do that job, unless you really love to do it?" he fumed. A video of the encounter went viral, with Damon being hailed a hero by teachers' groups.

Damon, like Sean Penn with Haiti and George Clooney with Darfur, is one of the few big names who can genuinely say they are activists, not just celebrity brands attached to a good cause. He founded the H2O Africa Foundation, which later became Water.org and which aims to bring clean water to disadvantaged people. He has been involved with Darfur. "Matt Damon seems like a real person on these things. He's running that whole water issue. That actually takes up a lot of his time," said Richard Laermer, a celebrity expert and author of the book 2011: Trendspotting. On a host of issues Damon has eloquently and publicly spoken on subjects dear to liberal hearts. He has slammed the recent debt-ceiling deal struck by Obama and the Republicans and called for rich people like himself to be taxed more. He has spoken against the Iraq war.

Perhaps one should not be surprised; Damon is highly educated. Though he eventually dropped out to pursue an acting career, he went to Harvard, where he studied English. His mother ? who introduced him at the teachers' rally ? is an education professor.

But, experts say, Hollywood has given him what is needed most: name recognition. "An actor has a precious thing in politics. People know who they are and they will pay attention when someone puts a microphone in front of them," said Syracuse's Thompson.

Indeed, that power can make a political career out of the unlikeliest of raw material. Look at how former pro wrestler Jesse Ventura became governor of Minnesota, or how comedian Franken became a senator from the same state and ? perhaps most bizarre of all ? how Schwarzenegger went from playing a killer robot from the future to being governor of California and responsible for one of the biggest economies on Earth.

The road between Hollywood and politics has also produced notable successes. Franken, a former stalwart of Saturday Night Live, has won plaudits for his seriousness as a politician. Schwarzenegger was seen as a joke when first elected, but he easily won a second term and became known for cutting-edge environmental policies. Most successful was Reagan, who went from a B-movie actor to being one of the most influential Republican presidents of the 20th century. Indeed, while most stars who dabble in public life are seen as "Hollywood liberals", some of the most successful, such as Reagan and Schwarzenegger, have been conservatives.

But the road to political power is not always easy for an actor. On the liberal side of the aisle, Warren Beatty was mentioned as someone who might run for president but never did. And among Republicans, the name of Fred Thompson stands as a salutary lesson in the limits of power. Few people have blurred the lines between acting and politics as much as Thompson, who combined his acting career with becoming a senator from Tennessee. He has played a US president on TV but when he ran for the Republican nomination in real life in 2008, his attempt was a disaster.

So, while Americans are tolerant of actors who want to be politicians, they do not write them a blank cheque. "Celebrity can be a blessing or a curse. You are able to get people to listen to you, but you need to have something they want to hear," said Robert Thompson.
